Toshiko Akiyoshi (born in 1929) is widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in the history of jazz. A Japanese-born pianist, composer, arranger, and bandleader, she has left an indelible mark on the international jazz scene through her innovative compositions and masterful orchestral writing.

After studying classical piano, Akiyoshi discovered jazz in post-war Japan. Recognized early by legendary pianist Oscar Peterson, she moved to the United States in 1956 to study at the prestigious Berklee College of Music. From there, she built an exceptional international career as both a performer and a composer, leading acclaimed big bands for decades.
