Initially trained in jazz from childhood on drums at the Marciac Middle School, Laurence Cousseau subsequently pursued a scientific career, completing a PhD on bird sociality. Discovering the alto flute at the age of 24 proved to be a decisive turning point, leading her to the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, where she obtained her Bachelor’s degree in 2023. In 2025, she presented her Master’s graduation recital with the highest distinction, and went on to receive her Master’s degree with great distinction in 2026.

Her musical universe lies at the crossroads of jazz and contemporary musical languages, which she explores within ensembles where different colours and musical traditions come together. In 2024, she founded a quintet centred around her own compositions, alongside Luis Miguel Aguilar, Joseph Nowell, Emanuel Van Mieghem and Pierre Ferrand.

Active on the Belgian scene, she regularly performs in clubs and at festivals such as the Brussels Jazz Weekend. She also performs internationally, notably touring La Réunion in 2026 with the group Nacelle, presenting a repertoire combining spiritual jazz and local influences.

Her dual artistic and scientific background also feeds into an interdisciplinary research project exploring the links between musical improvisation and animal social organisation.
